“My United Way lifts women and their families up and out of poverty.”

Passionate about women’s issues, Sarah Murphy says she has seen how the Women’s Leadership Council’s (WLC) E3 program has taken women from despair to a new lease on life, giving them hope, education and a bright future.

As a single mom with two young boys, Sarah knows the challenges and pressures that come with the territory. She’s extremely grateful for her support network and the great mentors who have helped her balance her career and family. It’s just part of the reason she became a Women’s Leadership Council member in 2013.

“I donated to United Way for years, but I became actively involved when I learned about the WLC and the impact it’s making on the lives of E3 participants,” Sarah explains. “It’s inspiring to be part of the transformation.”

Her motivation to advocate for women is fairly simple, she believes everyone in our community deserves to have a roof over their head and a hot meal, to be educated and to have the opportunity to succeed.

“I’m passionate about supporting the growth and welfare of women and removing barriers to success, in particular for those single moms,” she says. “When we support and lift a single mom and her children out of poverty, we’ve made a tremendous investment in our future and our community.”

Sarah makes it clear that community is very important to her. When she’s not busy transporting Colin, age 9, and Finnegan, age 7, to numerous activities, she volunteers with the WLC and LifeCare Alliance’s Meals on Wheels. Of course, that’s when she’s not super busy working fulltime as a Sales Strategy Analyst for Grange Insurance.

“It doesn’t take that much to make a big difference,” she says. “If a monetary contribution is not possible, then give your time, give something to make our community a better place.”
