CITY YEAR COLUMBUS

Description:

City Year Columbus is an education-focused nonprofit organization that currently serves in seven systemically under-resourced Columbus City Schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. City Year Columbus is the only organization in Columbus that places full-time mentors in schools where they serve all day, every day, helping students develop the skills needed to graduate and the confidence to reach their full potential. City Year AmeriCorps members work with students individually and in small groups to help them set goals, improve behavior, build social-emotional skills, master academic concepts and graduate ready for college and career success.

Programs and Services:

Whole School Whole Child (WSWC) is City Year’s research-based school model. WSWC is a partnership between City Year and Columbus City Schools intended to help all students graduate from high school. The WSWC program increases academic success and builds critical school capacities through an integrated approach that allows corps members to interact with students throughout the school day spanning the in-school and after-school hours. All of the activities that City Year provides, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. -5:30 p.m., can be categorized into three focus areas - Academic Support, Positive School Climate, and After-School Programming: As full-time, near peer tutors and mentors, corps members implement these components by providing small group literacy and/or math tutoring, whole classroom academic support, after-school and out-of-school programs, and school-wide pride events and family engagement activities. As part of their activities, corps members support students in 1:1 or small group tutoring, support teacher-led classroom instruction, and lead after-school programs and whole-school initiatives that promote a positive school culture and learning environment. WSWC uses performance metrics to measure impact. Based on the research that identifies four indicators that place students at risk for dropping out of school, City Year works in partnership with school staff to regularly monitor student performance of the early warning indicators — attendance, SEL (social, emotional, learning) behavior and course performance in math and English/Language Arts - which can identify students at risk of dropping out as early as sixth grade.
