United Way of Central Ohio is deeply saddened by the passing of David Paragas on Monday, Oct. 13, 2025, at the age of 64. David was a passionate leader whose vision, wisdom and generosity shaped United Way and touched countless lives throughout our community. From 2007 through 2017, he gave his time and expertise as a member and chair of numerous committees—including the Public Policy and Nominating committees, and Campaign Cabinet—always guided by a steadfast belief in the power of collaboration to create lasting change. His leadership as a member of the Board of Trustees from 2008 to 2017, and as its chair from 2012 to 2014, reflected his deep commitment to building a stronger, more resilient central Ohio.

“David’s legacy at United Way will endure most visibly in the transformation of our public policy work. He was instrumental in positioning United Way to effectively leverage public funding, ensuring that community impact could grow through sustainable, systemic investment,” said United Way’s President & CEO Lisa S. Courtice. “Through his leadership, advocacy and kindness, he left an indelible mark on our organization and our region—one defined by service, integrity and an unwavering belief in the potential of every person.”

Beyond his service in leadership roles, David was a dedicated Tocqueville Society member from 2017 through 2024, exemplifying the spirit of giving that inspires the United Way mission. His philanthropic heart matched his practical approach to civic engagement, and he continually sought ways to bring people and ideas together to address community challenges.

Professionally, David was a respected attorney at Barnes & Thornburg who had almost four decades of legislative, political and legal experience. His roles included serving as a senior aide to Ohio Senate presidents, advising on policy before the White House and federal agencies, and representing numerous state departments, agencies and universities. He also devoted his expertise to numerous civic and charitable causes, serving on various other boards including Flying Horse Farms, MidOhio Food Bank, the Columbus School for Girls and Junior Achievement of Central Ohio. Most importantly, David was a devoted husband, father and friend. His deep love for family and community was the foundation of everything he did.
