SPARK Program Helps Kids Prepare for Kindergarten

Five-year-old Jaxon loves math and really loves to show how high he can count. His mom, Nakisha, was excited for him to start kindergarten and knows he is more prepared now, thanks to Action for Children’s SPARK program.

Nakisha was not sure what skills Jaxon needed for kindergarten, or which concepts were important for him to know, so she turned to SPARK for support and resources. The kindergarten readiness home-visiting program provides parents with tips and activities to be their child’s first and best teacher, ensuring their child has the reading, math and social skills necessary to be ready for kindergarten.

“I’m really proud of his growth overall,” Nakisha said. “And his ability to hear a new concept and take it and run with it.”

Jaxon’s parents were equally involved in the program and took turns participating in his SPARK lessons and activities. Their commitment to Jaxon’s education, and the support and tools provided by the program’s parent partner, provided a solid foundation for him when he started kindergarten in the fall.
