When Donna decided to raise her late sister's children in addition to her own, she received support from several United Way nonprofit partners that helped her focus on providing consistency and care for her family. Today, her children have the stability they need to succeed in school and life.

Alphonso couldn’t imagine a future beyond the drugs and violence in his neighborhood. After joining a program at a United Way nonprofit partner, however, he received the support and respect he needed to succeed in school and life. Alphonso now earns As and Bs, and wants to give back to his community.

After overcoming poverty, addiction and human trafficking, April obtained a degree, and found a good job and purpose in her life. Employed by a United Way partner, she helps other trafficking survivors, offering opportunity and hope as they build new lives.

United Way's leadership program helped Jhuma and Mike find resources and meaningful connections to be effective neighborhood leaders. Jhuma is active in the refugee community in Northland, and Mike leads a group that supports schools and families on the South Side.
