Mark Levy never answers his phone while he’s driving. Well, except for that one time when he found out he won United Way’s Drive United raffle.
Mark, from Worthington, has been a dedicated United Way donor since 2009. In 2017, however, he didn’t make his usual payroll deduction gift when it became clear his retirement was on the horizon due to changes to the state agency he directed.
Whether it was a guilty conscience or he was just feeling lucky, Mark says he decided buying 10 Drive United raffle tickets was a good way to show support for United Way and to help the community.
Then he won. And he showed more support for United Way and helped the community even more.
Mark opted not to take the 2017 Jeep Wrangler, but to accept the $12,000 cash prize instead. Seeing an opportunity to keep his annual giving record unblemished, he donated $2,500 of his prize back to United Way of Central Ohio. Mark worked in the nonprofit world before he went to the State of Ohio, and he says his gift will fulfill “that urge to be service oriented.”
Through the years, he’s both designated his donations to several organizations he’s passionate about and given directly to United Way to impact community issues.
“I am sooo not a trend-setter,” he says. “But I hope my “win” turns into a win-win-win by encouraging more people to become aware of and support the good work of United Way now and in future campaigns.”
As for the rest of the money? Mark says, “It will be a nice cushion now that I’m retiring!”
Congratulations Mark, and thanks for joining United Way to fight poverty!
