Description:
Children's Hunger Alliance (CHA) is a statewide nonprofit organization headquartered in Columbus, with regional offices in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo. Founded in 1970 as the Hunger Task Force to study, create, modify and affect those systems having an impact on food resources for low-income families, the agency was renamed the Ohio Hunger Task Force in 1983 in recognition of its statewide presence. In 2002, the name Children's Hunger Alliance was adopted to reflect the importance of strategic alliances in creating long-term solutions for childhood hunger. CHA has been a sponsor of the USDA's Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) for in-home family childcare providers since 1978, for afterschool programs since 1981, and for childcare centers since 2016. In 2003, the agency began advocating for increased participation in the federal School Breakfast Program and Summer Nutrition Program. To test agency capacity to address food service gaps during summer months, CHA was approved to sponsor the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) in 2017 and in summer 2020, the agency provided summer meals for 150 sites across the state. In recognition of the importance of basic nutrition knowledge for food-insecure children, CHA began offering the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) Kids Club curriculum to school-age children in 1999 and the EatPlayGrow curriculum to children ages 3 to 5 in 2017. By building strategic partnerships with schools, faith and community-based organizations and state and local governments, CHA ensures access to nutrition meals for thousands of children daily.
