Job Description:
Position Overview
City Year Columbus is seeking a skilled fundraising professional with an entrepreneurial and strategic mindset to be the Managing Director of Development. This individual will be responsible for developing, executing and managing a comprehensive $3.0 million private, federal and public fundraising plan for City Year Columbus that aligns to our mission and vision.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Managing Director of Development will oversee a team that will be responsible for achieving the site’s fundraising goals including major gift solicitation, grant writing, and event planning. The Managing Director of Development will manage external communications and marketing efforts. Additionally, the Managing Director of Development will serve on the site leadership team, helping to drive and support site-wide initiatives and projects.
The principle responsibility of the Managing Director of Development is to develop and implement the processes and structures needed to secure current and future financial needs. In addition, the Managing Director of Development will effectively manage a staff of at least two (2) staff members and interns, work closely with the Executive Director to engage in externally facing activities, and ensure the successful achievement of the following.
Job Description
The Managing Director of Development will be responsible for planning, developing, executing and managing a comprehensive fundraising plan for City Year that aligns to the organization’s mission and vision.
Fundraising Strategy and Execution
Establish short and long range goals for restricted and unrestricted funding sources and leads the development team in developing strategies to approach donors. Including the cultivation of new donors (i.e. donor outreach and engagement and helping to increase the pipeline of new private sector business).
- Manage a development team responsible for the strategy and execution of a $3.0 million fundraising campaign, including $1+ million in private sector support.
- In partnership with the Executive Director, Board Members, and the City Year headquarters’ development office, a key initiative is to develop and implement a strategic and diversified fundraising plan that meets current goals and anticipates future needs and growth objectives.
- Manage a team of development professionals: hire, manage, and retain a team of development professionals to manage different aspects of the development pipeline.
- Oversee the development staff in writing compelling grant proposals and reports for foundations, government funders and corporate supporters.
- Implement a high-quality stewardship program that engages, recognizes and thanks supporters, strengthening their relationship with the organization.
- Oversee the planning and implementation of special events to raise the awareness of City Year, fundraise and engage individuals, foundations and corporations as champions and donors. Such events include, but are not limited to, Opening Day, Red Jacket Ball annual gala, specialty market events and AmeriCorps member graduation.
Major Gift / Donor Support
Steward major donors, board and Giving Circle donors with the intent to retain or upgrade gifts when possible.
- Develop innovative strategies to promote and increase individual giving.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of current and future major donors.
- Work with development staff to increase participation in City Year Giving Circles with individual donor gifts of $1,000+ and personally help to identify, recruit and steward Red Jacket Society donor gifts of $10,000+.
External Relations
- Work with the Executive Director to plan the strategy of donor engagement across sectors of revenue generation: private, government and education (state policy, district funding).
- Serve as a representative of City Year Columbus in the external community attending events on a frequent basis.
- Solely establish and build relationships in private, government and education sectors thereby securing both monetary and in-kind multi-year support.
- Work with the Executive Director and senior staff to lead board management and staff the Development Committee as a member of the senior team.
- In concert with the board Development Committee Chair and Board Chair, direct board members towards outreach and fundraising goals.
- Work with the Executive Director, Development Committee Chair and Board chair to ensure 100% participation in the board giving campaign.
- Oversee the Development Manager in the overall execution of a communications and marketing strategy including: planning and implementation of communications and public relations activities, the production of new and review of existing promotional materials for marketing effectiveness and adherence to brand guidelines, and overseeing web content management as well as e-news creation and distribution.
Financial Reporting
- Oversee reporting requirements, deadlines, processes and procedures for capturing, maintaining, and reporting accurate revenue.
- Provide monthly and as needed revenue reports to Executive Director, Board, and Headquarters staff.
- Oversee and manage revenue budgets and event budgets
- Oversee Salesforce donor management system; ensure that the integrity of the donor data is correct.
- Work with Development Manager to ensure gifts are processed and acknowledged in a timely manner.
- Ensure accurate maintenance of records and donor information in the Salesforce database and in local network and paper files.
- Manage pledge collections to successfully meet or surpass quarterly revenue goals.
Organizational Initiatives
- Help shape organizational strategy and play a leadership role in implementing the site’s local operating plan as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
- Work collaboratively with other site departments on a frequent basis and with City Year’s national headquarters in Boston.
- Attend and support whole site events including Opening Day, MLK Day, Red Jacket Ball Annual Gala, Graduation, and other site-wide designated events.
- Attend City Year national events including Summer Academy (a conference for all City Year Staff held in Boston in July), and other national conferences and events that may include overnight travel.
- Participate in City Year national and local portfolio groups on topics of interest.
- Assume other tasks as delegated by the Executive Director.
Corporate and Foundation Management
- Successfully steward current corporate and foundation donor relationships, managing appropriate frequency of outreach, communication, and involvement.
- Manage the identification and cultivation of new corporate and foundation partnerships, as well as the grant proposal and reporting processes for these supporters.
- Build City Year’s Team Sponsorship ($100,000 per year) process, which includes cultivation of current Team Sponsors and identifying and securing new Team Sponsors and connecting them to ongoing engagement opportunities.
