Title: Communications Specialist

Work Location: Star House, 1220 Corrugated Way, Columbus, OH 43201

Reports To: Communications and Grants Manager

Position Summary:

Star House is seeking a talented Communications Specialist that will play an integral role in supporting our growing organization’s communications and development efforts. This team member, who has a passion for Star House’s mission and vision and is an expert in communications, will manage Star House’s social media channels and will be responsible for submitting grant proposals and reports, completing communications projects for Star House’s CEO, updating Star House’s website, publishing monthly newsletters, developing communications plans and toolkits, designing promotional materials and more. This position will report directly to Star House’s Communications and Grants Manager.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

The following duties are representative of performance expectations; however, the list below is not ranked in order of importance.

  • Research, write and submit grant proposals of significant value, interim and final reports, donation reports and more
  • Independently manage Star House’s social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, and the social media calendar
  • Complete pressing and quick-turnaround communications projects for Star House’s CEO
  • Create and publish social media content, including copy, designing graphics, gifts, videos, etc.
  • Responsible for 24/7 monitoring of social media engagement and responding in a timely and appropriate manner to clients, donors, volunteers, partners, lawmakers and more
  • Update Star House’s website (hosted by WIX), including news blog and events
  • Draft and publish monthly newsletters, e-blasts, press releases, advertisements, etc.
  • Enter and update grant awards in select databases, such as Salesforce and Monday.com
  • Develop communications plans, toolkits and advertisements for campaigns, events and reports
  • Design original promotional materials and merchandise for internal and external use
  • Monitor news for Star House mentions, track external events and fundraisers
  • Create portions of Star House’s organizational communications plan and annual reports
  • Maintain regular, strategic communication with team members regarding guest needs, donations, upcoming events and more
  • Evaluate and improve the overall effectiveness of communication strategies by tracking data related to website hits, newsletter readership, etc.
  • Review and copy-edit content for the communications and development team, as needed
  • Design appealing images and infographics for social media posts, newsletters and the website
  • Research and determine eligibility for new grant opportunities, especially federal funds
  • Attend events, as needed
  • Additional duties as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Believe in the core values of Star House, be driven by its mission
  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, English or a related field
  • 5 years of experience in writing/editing, message and/or web content development, etc.
  • Must be an expert in both written and verbal communication
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn
  • Must have experience with design software, such as Canva
  • Experience with WIX, Sprout Social, Icontact and/or Google Suite is a plus
  • Experience with grants, donations, donor databases and Salesforce is preferred
  • Ability to work in and promote a collaborative, team-work environment

Note: This assignment may require a valid driver’s license and access/availability of a reliable vehicle.

Conduct:
