pROVEN mETHODS: IDENTIFYING AND IMPLEMENTING
'wHAT wORKS'

American Electric Power (AEP) / IBEW Local 1466 received the highest honor, The Community Impact Award of Excellence, which recognizes overall achievement in corporate and volunteer philanthropic efforts.  Award judges found that AEP excels in all aspects of their campaign including strategic performance, leadership giving, and employee education and volunteerism.  AEP’s employee-driven campaign has done an excellent job of communicating the work of United Way, and has experienced significant growth over the past three years.  The company’s emphasis on encouraging employees to give at leadership levels has resulted in a high level of these important gifts.

Highlights of AEP's Campaigns with UWCO:

  • Make an information packet available to all new hires throughout the year.
  • Encourage involvement throughout the year through groups like Key Club to raise participation outside of the main campaign.
  • Senior management at AEP is always part of the big picture campaign. Rather than meet separately, they are involved in all of the activities, as time permits, with the employees. They represent unified support.

Bruner Corporation received a fifth consecutive award recognizing their Employee Volunteerism. This award is granted to organizations that promote philanthropic work amongst their employees. Bruner Corporation continues to provide year round opportunities for their employees to volunteer in the community.

BRUNER'S 'WOW' FACTOR

At Bruner, one of the keys to campaign success is having leadership team members, both company executives and labor heads, address employees on a personal level. When a respected leader tells a story with a personal twist, people are “wowed,” and pay special attention to the message. Another wow factor at Bruner is a dollar for dollar corporate match program, which displays dramatically how strongly the company feels about the value of United Way.

To keep the “wows” coming all year long, Bruner uses some clever promotions, such as a Gossip Jar, where people put money toward United Way if they gossip, show up late for meetings or are responsible for some other small infractions. The company’s annual picnic features an activity where employees get to “dunk an executive” with proceeds going to United Way.
