American Electric Power is one of the largest electric utilities in the United States, delivering electricity to more than 5 million customers in 11 states. AEP ranks among the nation’s largest generators of electricity, owning more than 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the U.S. AEP also owns the nation’s largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes more 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines than all other U.S. transmission systems combined. AEP’s transmission system directly or indirectly serves about 10 percent of the electricity demand in the Eastern Interconnection, the interconnected transmission system that covers 38 eastern and central U.S. states and eastern Canada, and approximately 11 percent of the electricity demand in ERCOT, the transmission system that covers much of Texas.

Quick Tips:

  • If a union representative is visible when asking for pledges, it can have a strong positive effect.
  • Make an information packet available to all new hires throughout the year.
  • Encourage involvement throughout the year through groups like Key Club to raise participation outside of the main campaign.

Executives in Action

Senior management at AEP is always part of the big picture campaign. Rather than meet separately, they are involved in all of the activities, as time permits, with the employees. They represent unified support for the campaign, and are even willing to “take pies in the face” as part of fund-raising and awareness events.

Many members of AEP’s steering committee has been together for many years, with a few new faces added each year as others move on to different projects, creating a cohesive organ to perform the core duties of organization, planning and upfront communication. The committee is a combination of people who express a strong interest in participating and people recruited because they will be valuable assets to the committee.

Building on Success

In addition to maintaining continuity on the steering committee, AEP reviews the relative success of its previous year’s campaign in order to improve participation and contributions each year. AEP’s campaign has a year-round feeling, with the steering committee beginning in November for the following year’s activities, which kick off with incentives beginning in the first quarter of the year and the actual campaign during August/September.

Information Flows

At AEP, ongoing results are reported on a weekly basis, which spurs a friendly competition among different groups to meet and exceed goals. There is also an information flow about community involvement and the work done by United Way agencies that serves as a strong motivating factor for AEP employees. Team leaders are continually communicating the message to the employees, answering questions, encouraging pledge card completion and maintaining top of mind awareness of the campaign.

Because AEP has a number of locations, promotions such as their “$1,000 Pyramid Game” rotate among various sites to maintain high interest level and involvement of all employees.
